Welcome to the website of Bernard A. Kohn. Enjoy searching through a selection of wood engravings, watercolors, serigraphs, watercolours and drawings taken from the prolific body of work by Bernard A. Kohn, as well as a biography and a list of collections which include his work. Bernard Kohn worked in art from the 1940s to the 1980s in Philadelphia. He was particularly well-known in the area as a print maker. Amongst his work you will find serigraphs (or silk-screen prints), wood engravings, gouaches, watercolours and much else. Much of his work is abstract expressionist in nature. A touching lyrical fluidity expressed through the subtle use of color and contrast permeates Kohn's work. The intensely rhythmical and hauntingly sensitive images reflect a strong inspiration rooted in Kohn's profession as a music publisher as well as his love of poetry, dance and travel. He illustrated a number of poems by Wallace Stevens and by St. John Perse. In 1978 he wrote: "I have always been deeply involved with the interrelationship of the Arts. The starting point of a print or painting - the so-called inspiration if you will - often stems from a poem, a dance, a musical work, or the poetic translation of nature into graphic forms."
